Almost every year, the Great Grey Shrike (Lanius excubitor) is found on Trischen. The literal translation of its scientific name means “sentinel butcher”.  

With its sharp claws, hooked beak and black mask, the blackbird-sized grey shrike (Lanius excubitor) is impressive. Similar to other birds of the shrike family, it is known as "butcher bird" because of its feeding habit: Shrikes catch insects and vertebrates such as frogs, lizards and small birds and pierce them with their bodies on thorns. This makes it possible for the shrikes to tear the flesh into smaller pieces and serves also as a “larder”.

The distribution area of the Great Grey Shrike is daunting: In addition to large parts of the northern hemisphere it also inhabits steppe areas of China and Mongolia. But despite this geographic extent, it is a rare nesting bird: The intensification of agriculture and the destruction of potential breeding habitats (meadows, wetlands, marsh and heathland) in conjunction with the two cold winters of 1962/63 and 1978/79 led to a dramatic population decline. In Germany the Great Grey Shrike is therefore listed on the Red List of Threatened Species in Category 1 (Critically Endangered)! Only 5,000-10,000 breeding pairs are estimated for Central Europe.

რუხი ღაჟო გავრცელებულია ევროპაში, აზიის დიდ ნაწილში, ჩრდ. ამერიკის ტაიგის ზონაში.

საქართველოს ფარგლებში რუხი ღაჟო გვხდება თითქმის ყველგან როგორც მოზამთრე ფრინველი.

ბინადრობს ბუჩქნარებში, ტყეთა სანაპიროებში, იშვიათად - ბაღებსა და პარკებში. ბუდეს იკეთებს ბუჩქებზე ან ხეებზე მიწის ზედაპირიდან 2 – 5 მეტრის დაშორებით. მაისში დებს 4 – 8 კვერცხს. კრუხობის ხანგრძლივობა აღწევს 15 დღემდე. ძირითად საკვებს შეადგენენ თაგვისებრი მღრნელები, ბიგები, მცირე ზომის მგალოველი ფრინველები და მათი ბარტყები, ზოგჯერ ღამურები, ბაყაყები, ხვლიკები, გველები. რუხი ღაჟო დიდი რაოდენობით ანადგურებს მწერებს, მათ შორის მავნე ფორმებსაც.

მწერების მასობრივად განადგურებით რუხ ღაჟოს სახალხო მეურნეობისათვის დიდი სარგებლობა მოაქვს.

ცნობილია რუხი ღაჟოს 20-მდე ქვესახე, რომელთაგან საქართველოს ფარგლებში გვხდება ჩვეულებრივი რუხი ღაჟო - Lanius excubitor excubitor
